History
The inspiration for the Jägar pan goes back several decades and comes from the old Nordic dish "kolbulle" (a type of baked bread/ pancake with pork meat often served with lingonberries). It was first cooked in a pan by, charcoal burners, lumberjacks and other manual laborers who worked for long periods of time without access to fresh ingredients. Hunter/Jägar frying pans began to be manufactured in Smaland (a traditional province of Sweden) in the 1980s and are still a valued tool among hunters, fishermen and those with a passion for the outdoors and bushcraft.
Preparation for use and maintenance of carbon steel pans
For best results when cooking, the pan should be well coated with oil or fat (seasoning).
You can, of course, also use the pan as is at the time of purchase. Just wash it before first use. At first, the pan will have an uneven color, but over time, after several times of lighting the fire, the entire pan will blacken. When using a frying pan, fat is always needed when frying on it. This is a slow method for a seasoned pan.
However, we recommend that proper seasoning (firing), which will provide a "non-stick coating" and a protective layer against rust formation. When cooking, you will still need to use fat in the pan, but much less.
Campfire burnouts
1. Start by washing the pan thoroughly with hot water and a little detergent.
2. Then drain the pan thoroughly.
3. Now it's time to burn the new pan so that it it gets a natural non-stick coating. Pgrease the pan with a thin layer of cooking oil over the entire surface. If the pan has a wooden handle (S3-S4), unscrew it before the actual firing so that it does not come in contact with the fire.
4. Put the pan straight into the fire. Leave it like this until the oil starts to smoke and change color.
5. Repeat the procedure 3-5 times.
6. If the pan begins to dry out, apply another thin layer of oil.
7. A properly fired pan will be brownish-black, often lighter on the edges. It only gets darker and more beautiful over time.
You can also do the firing at home in the oven (200 degrees for about 15-20 minutes per layer). However, remember to supervise the process and don't forget to ventilate properly, as there will be a lot of smoke.
