Savotta Hatka Backpack (12L) - Brown
Savotta Hatka Backpack (12L) - Brown
"Hatka" is a peculiar Finnish word, used exclusively in the phrase "ottaa hatkat," which means "to run away" or "to say goodbye hastily, as it were.". The Hatka backpack was developed while prototyping small, quick detachable escape-and-escape survival kits for a military project, so now you know how much the quaint name makes sense.
Hatka - escape backpack - design
At first glance, the Hatka 12L may look like a simple roll-top bag with shoulder straps, but on closer inspection there's really a lot going on. This design was conceived as part of a special military cargo carrying system that required a small backpack that could be easily attached to a larger backpack.
On the outside you have four rows of PALS tape. They can be used to attach cargo holds, bungee cords and buckles to quickly attach/detach the Hatki from a larger backpack. Four loops of webbing on the bottom can be used for elastic lines, allowing you to carry things under the backpack.
Two long internal compartments are used to organize smaller items, and the D-ring provides a place to secure small valuables. Large external compartment on the back is large enough to accommodate a water tank or tarp.
Simple 25 mm wide shoulder straps are attached to D-rings and completely detachable, so they can also be replaced with padded ones, if you prefer. It can also be configured as a single diagonal shoulder strap. They are designed to be lightweight, easy to pack and easy to store for attaching Hatki to larger packages.
Tricks and modularity of the backpack
Clip it to a larger pack to use as a grab-and-go daypack. This can be done by pushing it under the lid or using packing straps. A really amazing way to do this is to attach the Hatki to the side compression straps or lid with G-hooks or PALS-mounted SR buckles .
If necessary, you can add a lot of equipment outside of this fairly small setup. PALS webbing allows you to attach cargo holds, but can also be used (and the four loops of webbing at the bottom) to pull bungee cords to carry rainwear, tarps, etc.
Since the Hatka is in many ways the spiritual successor to the venerable Daypack 202, it also has very simple shoulder straps. This reduces weight and bulk, which is great when you carry it strapped to a larger backpack. They can easily be replaced with more advanced padded options if needed.
Although there aren't many compartments, you can still make great use of them by cleverly packing. The main compartment is, of course, a place to store big things, two small interior compartments will hold all sorts of small items and even water bottles. D-shaped ring can be used to pin or tie small valuables in a safe place. The outer compartment on the back can be used to carry a closed-cell foam insert as a frame sheet or to carry a tarp or hydration system.
