Puronvarsi history
Federico Buldrini
"What I'm about to tell you is the story of a Finnish family that raised many of its members in the art of forging.
Our story takes place in Härmä, a small town 24 km south of Kauhava, the historic "capital of puukko" in western Finland. We are in 1850 and it is in this year that a man from the Puronvarsi family starts his own business as a blacksmith. Son Matti, following in his parent's footsteps, learns and passes on the craft to one of his descendants, Esa Puronvarsi. In 1927. In independent Finland, Yrjö Puronvarsi was born, and at a young age he and his eight brothers learned the art of forging from their father and uncle. He will be the only one to continue this work, although there will be a period when as many as twenty family members will work simultaneously as blacksmiths. Yrjö has three children, two boys and a girl. Neither son was ever interested in family work, while the daughter, Ulla, in her early 80s. became Antti Mäkinen's mother. Antti begins career in blacksmithing in 2006. Yrjö, a blacksmith who had worked longer for the family, passed on his knowledge to his nephew to create his successor. Today, at 85 years old, he no longer works full time, but still works six days a week, for the love of it and exercise"
