The active substance of the fuels in the cubes is Hexamethylenetetramine, which is a heterocyclic chemical compound obtained during the reaction process of formaldehyde ("dehydrated formalin") and ammonia. The substance is in the form of white crystals, then compressed into larger cubes that serve as a "fuel cartridge" for the tourist stoves. This type of fuel is increasingly used by outdoor, bushcraft and survival fans as well as uniformed and rescue services.
